My Original PhD Cover Letter That Got Me Accepted
This is the original cover letter I submitted to apply for my PhD at the Chair of Finance and Investment at the Technical University of Berlin. I was accepted and started my PhD in 2019.

Sehr geehrter Herr Prof. Dr. Hirth,
Herr Dr. Bade hat mir mitgeteilt, dass meine Masterarbeit mit 1,0 benotet wurde. Dadurch motiviert erwäge ich, mein Studium mit einer Promotion fortzusetzen. An Ihrem Lehrstuhl habe ich sowohl meine Bachelor- und Masterarbeit als auch ABWL II, F&I I und F&I II erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Daher möchte ich Sie fragen, ob Sie meinen Promotionswunsch begleiten würden.
Besonders interessant finde ich modelltheoretische Erklärungsansätze für Bankenkrisen und Portefeuille-Entscheidungen, wie zum Beispiel in den Promotionsarbeiten an Ihrem Lehrstuhl „Schockverstärkung durch Insolvenzkaskaden in Bankensystemen“ von Dr. Förster bzw. „Insiderhandel im CAPM“ von Dr. Sendilmen.
Ich würde mich freuen, Ihnen meine Promotionsabsichten persönlich erläutern zu dürfen.

Dr. Bade recently informed me that my master's thesis received a grade of 1.0. This result has motivated me to consider pursuing a doctorate. Having completed both my bachelor's and master's theses at your chair, as well as ABWL II, F&I I, and F&I II, I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to supervise my doctoral research.
I am particularly interested in model-theoretic approaches to banking crises and portfolio decisions, such as those explored in Dr. Förster's dissertation "Shock Amplification through Insolvency Cascades in Banking Systems" and Dr. Sendilmen's "Insider Trading in the CAPM."
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my doctoral plans with you in person.
